Your iPhone 3G or 3GS, or 2nd generation iPod Touch, can now be transformed into a complete GPS navigation solution for your car. All you need is the Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone or iPod Touch along with the app Magellan RoadMate for iPhone 3G and 3GS.
Although iPhone 3G or 3GS has its own GPS receiver, it is enhanced by the built-in receiver of the Premium Car Kit for an even quicker and more accurate set of directions. With the RoadMate, you get a turn-by-turn routing application. For 2nd generation iPhones that do not have GPS hardware, the kit can substantially expand its use by providing it with navigation capabilities, including turn-by-turn GPS functions.
In addition to its GPS receiver, the kit also includes a Bluetooth chip and a speaker mounted at its bottom section. Once your iPhone or iPod Touch is attached to the kit, the speaker is automatically activated so that audio, which could either be music or voice prompts and sound effects from the RoadMate app, coming from them is heard through the speaker. You don’t have to turn on your Bluetooth connection for this. For your iPhone, activating its Bluetooth connection with the kit means that you can use it as a speakerphone.
The kit also charges your devices so you will never run out of power while in the car. An added feature is an audio line out that connects to your car’s audio system, allowing you to listen to your music through the car’s speakers.
The Magellan Premium Car Kit can be installed on any flat surface in your car using a clamp- and suction-mount. The cradle is designed in a way that it can accommodate your iPhone or iPod Touch whether or not they are inside a protective case. It uses a dock connector that is spring loaded to make mounting and dismounting quick and easy. The clamp holding your phone or mp3 player is adjusted by a button on the right of the kit, while a pad that adjusts to their thickness is reset by a switch at the back. The mount can be rotated to present either a landscape or portrait orientation.
